Euro Area Current Account Surplus Shrinks in February 2026
In February 2026, the euro area posted a current account surplus of €25 billion, marking a decrease from €40 billion in January. Over the twelve months leading up to February 2026, the surplus reached €289 billion, representing 1.8% of the region's GDP. This figure is notably lower than the €371 billion surplus (2.4% of GDP) recorded during the same period the previous year.
Regarding financial transactions, euro area residents increased their holdings of non-euro area portfolio investment securities by €918 billion in the twelve months to February 2026. Meanwhile, investors from outside the euro area acquired €1,013 billion worth of euro area portfolio investment securities during the same timeframe.
