U.K. Banks Need End of Tax Debate to Be Able to Move on -- Market Talk
Dow Jones2026/10/14 06:440644 GMT - U.K. banks need rumors of higher taxes to be resolved before they can push on further, Citi analysts write. The U.K. budget this month could act as a clearing event for the country's banks, the analysts note. It remains unclear if the bank tax will rise, with Citi's base case that it doesn't. The outcome for banks is manageable even if the rate does increase, Citi says. Third-quarter results for the lenders should also reassure investors, with more evidence of net interest margin expansion and volume growth. Citi continues to favor NatWest and Lloyds, with buy recommendations on both stocks, while it is neutral-rated on HSBC, Standard Chartered and Barclays. ([email protected])
