Market Chatter: General Motors CEO Says Next-Gen Driver-Assist Technology Advancing Toward 2028 Launch

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/12 23:55
07:55 PM EDT, 10/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors Company (GM) remains on track to introduce "eyes-off, hands-off" driving technology by 2028, CEO Mary Barra said, CNBC reported Monday, citing her interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer on "Mad Money." Barra said that she recently tested the system and was impressed by how much it had improved since an earlier ride in March. She said the team is making significant progress toward the 2028 goal and that GM will be well positioned in personal autonomy, according to the report. Barra defended GM's decision to exit the Cruise robotaxi business, calling it difficult but the right call, and said the company retained much of the Cruise team to work on personal autonomous driving. She said GM is not in the taxi or bus business, the report said. She also pushed back on the notion that wider adoption of autonomous vehicles would reduce personal car ownership, saying people still value having a car in their driveway, according to the report. Although the company’s quarterly results exceeded expectations and profit guidance was raised, capital expenditures more than doubled compared to the same period last year, putting pressure on free cash flow. This has raised concerns in the market about the sustainability of investment returns in AI data centers, causing the stock to close down by about 3% on Friday.

Report: The Trump administration plans to remove some tariffs on Canadian goods to boost the midterm elections

According to media reports, the Trump administration plans to exempt certain Canadian agricultural and forestry products from the 50% tariff, with an announcement as early as this Friday. To maintain the overall scale of tariffs, this tax reduction may be offset by imposing additional tariffs on other Canadian goods. The move is mainly intended to help Maine Senator Susan Collins retain her seat in the midterm elections, while it could also benefit other Republican candidates in trade-dependent states.
