XRP trapped between $1.30 and $1.59 as record open interest fails to drive breakout

XRP remains locked in a narrow trading range between $1.30 and $1.59, with technical signals pointing to another prolonged period of accumulation. The ongoing contraction of the Bollinger Bands on the weekly chart suggests that the asset is entering a phase of low volatility, historically consistent with four-year market cycles for XRP.

Historical parallels and trading range

Analysis of XRP’s price patterns indicates that September often marks the start of extended periods of sideways trading. Historically, XRP has faced two previous stagnation cycles: from September 2018 to November 2020, and from September 2022 to November 2024. During these times, the cryptocurrency largely traded within tight boundaries, frustrating both bullish and bearish traders and reducing price movement activity.

Data from October 2026 reveals similar signs emerging for a potential third cycle. While external developments have created varying headlines, the underlying market mechanics for XRP remain largely unchanged. This has made the current price corridor a challenging environment for traders using leverage, as quick reversals punctuate any breakout attempts.

Open interest and capital concentration

The latest figures from analytics firm Coinglass show that open interest in XRP derivatives stands close to $3.1 billion, approaching its highest recorded levels. In contrast to previous consolidation phases, capital has not exited the market this time. Instead, liquidity is concentrated within a narrow range, increasing the risk of volatility spikes if a catalyst introduces a directional move.

Despite this buildup, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) for XRP is effectively neutral at 44, indicating a lack of strong bullish or bearish momentum. The current environment has left many leveraged traders exposed to rapid liquidations as minor fluctuations within the range trigger both long and short stop-loss orders.

Any attempt to push XRP below the critical $1.30–$1.34 zone swiftly results in aggressive buying and the liquidation of short positions, while bullish breakouts above $1.50 are consistently blocked by significant opposing orders, often leaving buyers with losses.

Volatility and trader challenges

The enduring squeeze of the Bollinger Bands signals that traders face a challenging period, with price volatility steadily decreasing. Both short- and long-position holders struggle to profit as liquidity pulses rapidly in response to minor market moves.

XRP’s chart currently reflects a market that punishes both bullish and bearish excesses in equal measure. Until a major development shifts the balance, analysts indicate that the asset will likely remain within its current range, acting as a battleground for stop-loss hunting and causing frustration among long-term investors.

According to market observers, a significant catalyst will be needed to break this technical gridlock. Until then, the high levels of open interest and low volatility contribute to a sense of uncertainty for investors seeking directional momentum.

XRP is a cryptocurrency and digital payment protocol developed by Ripple Labs, designed to facilitate fast and low-cost international money transfers for banks and financial institutions.

Mini dictionary: Bollinger Bands, a technical analysis tool consisting of a moving average line flanked by two standard deviation bands. Analysts use them to identify periods of high and low volatility and potential breakout or breakdown points.

The turmoil also threatens to spread across Europe.

Once frenzied buying, now the "ammunition warehouse" shrinks by 51 trillion KRW! Korean retail investors can no longer afford to buy

In four months, Korean retail investors' "ammunition stockpile" has dropped by 36.5%, returning to levels seen at the beginning of the year. Although retail investors have collectively made net purchases exceeding 75 trillion won, they are still absorbing the sell-off, but the influx of new funds has dried up, and the replenishment rate lags far behind the consumption rate. Combined with the KOSPI plunging nearly 20% this month, continued net selling by foreign investors, and concerns over AI-related credit risks, the Korean stock market may find it difficult to see a sustained rebound in the short term without support from private investors' funds.
