As Apple intensifies its efforts in foldable displays and AI business, it faces a haptic technology patent compensation ruling exceeding $5.7 billion. On September 25, a federal jury in California found that Apple's Taptic Engine, used in certain iPhone and Apple Watch models, infringed on two patents held by Taction Technology.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, as Apple Inc. (AAPL.US), the U.S. consumer electronics giant, doubles down on foldable iPhone and AI-driven business growth, it is facing a patent infringement verdict for haptic technology with compensation exceeding $5.7 billion. On September 25, a federal jury in California found that Apple’s Taptic Engine, used in certain iPhones and Apple Watches, infringed on two patents held by Taction Technology. Apple denies using the other party’s technology and has explicitly stated it will appeal.

Therefore, this is still a jury verdict that may be affected by subsequent judicial proceedings, and the market has not interpreted it as Apple having already paid the compensation. For investors, the focus is on the ultimate liability and its impact on cash flow, rather than directly interpreting it as a reversal of Apple’s core product competitiveness.

From an engineering perspective, haptic feedback is an interactive capability comprising mechanical actuators, vibration damping, and control systems—an essential component of high-end device experience. Previous appeals revolved around how to interpret the patent claims on “highly damped output” and whether this should be limited to mechanical damping. This dispute serves as a reminder to every market participant focused on mega-cap stocks—subtle user experience differences may also incur significant intellectual property costs.

The Haptic Patent Dispute Isn’t Over: Apple Ordered to Pay $5.7 Billion to Taction Technology

According to U.S. media reports, a federal jury in California on Friday ruled that Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) must pay Taction Technology over $5.7 billion in damages for infringing patents related to haptic technology.

The core of the case is two patents allegedly infringed by Apple’s Taptic Engine: U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117. Haptic feedback refers to the vibrations generated by iPhones or Apple Watches during touchscreen interaction, typing, and switching operations.

The lawsuit was initially filed in 2021. Although a judge issued a summary judgment in Apple’s favor in 2023, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit revived the case in 2025, determining that the lower court had excluded some expert testimony from Taction and erred in its interpretation of claim construction.

“There are fundamental differences between Apple’s Taptic Engine and Taction’s technology. During the trial, Taction’s own tests on Apple’s products confirmed this as well. Apple doesn’t use Taction’s technology, and we will appeal,” an Apple spokesperson recently told CNBC.

Foldable Screens Drive Up Prices, AI May Spark a Wave of iPhone Upgrades: Apple’s ‘Experience Premium Defense Battle’

Apple is adding two pillars to its next growth phase: high-end hardware and AI. Its first foldable iPhone Duo is priced from $1,999 in the U.S., with pre-orders scheduled for October 16 and official sales on October 23, aiming to broaden its product portfolio with a higher price bracket and differentiated form factor. Apple is rapidly shifting its growth focus to the expensive foldable iPhone and AI-centric business lines.

A strong growth catalyst with substantial impact on future performance will undoubtedly be the high-end product structure upgrade brought by the foldable iPhone and a new wave of replacement demand sparked by on-device + cloud-based AI experiences.

The already launched iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, features a 7.6-inch inner screen, and supports dual-app side-by-side operation, undoubtedly adding a higher-tier offering to Apple’s lineup. For foldables, Apple’s AI system can leverage the larger display to allow users to browse information on one side while interacting efficiently with Siri AI, improving personal context understanding and cross-app multitasking, thereby enhancing the practical value of premium devices.

AI also offers Apple a new pathway to extend hardware sales into recurring service revenues. Apple has stated in its official documentation that AI features partially dependent on server-side models will eventually offer paid extended access. This means AI’s commercial contribution can be reflected both in hardware upgrades and in greater usage and continuous service fees.

For the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 ending June 27, Apple’s revenue was $109.4 billion, up 16% year-on-year, with iPhone, Mac, and Services posting double-digit growth. The new, multi-year earnings boom driven by AI will depend on whether model capabilities can be translated into frequently used features for users. Apple’s approach, combining on-device processing with private cloud computing, integrates personal context understanding, app invocation, and task execution with device experience. From an engineering and investment viewpoint, the coordinated upgrade of Apple’s CPU, GPU, neural engine, and memory systems can support increasingly complex local AI tasks; but these investments will only translate into sustained profits if they drive device upgrades, user retention, and payment value.

Additionally, for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, Apple generated $54.252 billion in iPhone revenues and $30.739 billion in Services, together accounting for approximately 77.7% of total revenue. The iPhone Duo, starting at $1,999, with a 7.6-inch inner screen and support for dual-app parallel operations, gives Apple a higher price level within its product hierarchy. Its financial logic lies in boosting average selling prices via greater adoption of premium models, increasing replacement willingness with new use cases, and expanding service income opportunities through user retention. According to the official schedule, the Duo will be available for pre-order on October 16 and released on October 23, with these growth drivers to be validated upon actual delivery.

With a market capitalization close to $5 trillion, Apple is, in essence, undergoing an ‘experience premium defense battle’—foldable screens and AI technology competing for higher product value, while manufacturing costs, inference service costs, and potential patent payouts determine how much of that value translates into profit. Patent verdicts are part of specific litigation risks, but this negative event is making the market pay closer attention to whether the high-end technology pathway and AI investments can ultimately deliver robust margins and free cash flow.
