Report: Anthropic in talks to lease up to 1GW of data center capacity, with related investments of at least 40 billions dollars
According to media reports, Anthropic is considering renting up to 1GW of computing power from Stream Data Centers. The data center developer indicated that deploying a full 1GW of computing power would require an investment of at least 40 billion USD. Anthropic needs to provide financial guarantees for this lease and separately raise funds for the installed chips.
According to The Information, Anthropic is exploring the possibility of leasing up to 1GW of computing power from Stream Data Centers. Stream is a US-based data center developer majority-owned by Apollo Global Management.
The data center developer stated that deploying a full 1GW of computing power would require at least $40 billion in capital investment. Anthropic needs to provide a financial guarantee for the lease and separately raise funds for the chips installed within these data centers.
Anthropic has discussed becoming a direct tenant and deploying TPUs co-designed by Google and Broadcom, but the company can also use NVIDIA’s GPUs. Google may provide a credit guarantee, but the exact scope of this support is still unclear.
The related negotiations are still at a preliminary stage, and both capacity and deal structure remain under discussion.
Apollo acquired a majority stake in Stream in November 2025. At that time, Apollo stated that the developer had delivered more than 20 data center campuses and possessed a development pipeline exceeding 4GW.
This potential leasing agreement would allow Anthropic to further advance its strategy of moving away from relying solely on cloud service providers for server capacity.
Anthropic has already committed to investing over $100 billion with AWS over ten years to secure up to 5GW of capacity and reached an agreement with AMD to deploy up to 2GW of Instinct GPUs.
Anthropic co-founder and Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown once said: “Running across a diversified range of hardware allows us to allocate the right compute workloads to the right hardware.”
Previously, Anthropic signed a 20-year lease agreement with TeraWulf covering approximately 401MW of critical IT load in Kentucky.
