XRP faced renewed downward pressure after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a strongly hawkish speech on inflation at the Jackson Hole conference, signaling potential changes in US monetary policy.
XRP falls 5% to $1.38 as Fed signals possible September rate hike
Fed’s Inflation Message Drives Market Reaction
The value of XRP declined to approximately $1.38 on Friday, reflecting a 5% decrease over the past 24 hours, based on CoinGecko data. The cryptocurrency, which is associated with Ripple Labs, had reached $1.47 earlier in the week before reversing course.
In his highly anticipated address, Warsh confirmed that the Federal Reserve intends to maintain its 2% inflation target and emphasized that price pressures remain elevated. He stated that 54% of the components used to measure Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation had risen by over 3% during the previous year.
“None of these measures are perfect, but they all tell a similar story: inflation is running above our 2 percent target,” Warsh stated, according to CNBC.
Warsh further explained that short-term interest rates continue to serve as the central bank’s main tool for meeting its dual objectives of price stability and maximum employment.
Market Anticipates Possible Rate Hike
In response to Warsh’s remarks, financial markets began factoring in the possibility of an additional interest rate hike, which could be considered as early as the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting in September if inflation measures do not improve. The prospect of higher interest rates typically makes speculative assets like cryptocurrencies less attractive, leading to broad sell-offs in the sector.
Despite recent losses, XRP’s value remains significantly above its previous levels. Over the past month, CoinGecko data indicates that XRP has gained about 39%, highlighting ongoing volatility in the market.
The September meeting of the Federal Reserve now stands out as a crucial event for traders in the digital asset sector, as market participants look for further signals on the path of monetary policy and its impact on risk assets.
Ripple Labs, the technology company behind XRP, has often seen its associated token respond sharply to macroeconomic developments and central bank statements, reflecting its sensitivity to broader market trends.
While Warsh emphasized vigilance on elevated inflation metrics, it remains uncertain whether his warning will translate into immediate policy shifts or continued caution in the months ahead.
