Waymo will launch its driverless taxi service in Germany in 2027, entering its third overseas market outside the United States.
Waymo, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Alphabet, announced on Tuesday its plan to launch robotaxi services in Germany in 2027.
According to Jinse Finance APP, Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous driving subsidiary, announced on Tuesday that it plans to launch robotaxi services in Germany in 2027. This will be its third international market outside the United States and marks its first entry into the European Union.
Waymo stated in its official blog that, in the coming weeks, it will begin "phased" road tests in Munich. The objectives include building high-precision maps, training local autonomous driving experts, and adapting its software for the city’s "unique driving environment." The company plans to open the service to the public by the end of next year.
Waymo Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana wrote in the blog: "Munich is an important hub for global mobility and engineering. Integrating into this city marks a critical milestone in our global expansion journey."
So far, Waymo has firmly established itself as the leading player in the U.S. robotaxi sector, though the industry is still in its early stages. According to its official website, the company currently operates in 11 U.S. cities and is working to expand to an additional 19 cities. Last month, Waymo announced plans to expand its business footprint to San Diego, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Tampa, Florida; and Denver, Colorado.
Munich is the third overseas city for Waymo after London and Tokyo, and the company is currently conducting road tests in the latter two markets. As of March this year, Waymo’s cumulative fully autonomous driving mileage has reached nearly 221 million miles (approximately 356 million kilometers).
