Ethereum Could Explode to $5K as Liquidity Rotation Sets the Stage for Altseason

  • Ethereum could target $5,000 if ETH breaks above major technical resistance.
  • Tom Lee expects Ethereum to reclaim $5,000 before the end of 2026.
  • A stronger ETH rally could trigger liquidity rotation and ignite the next altseason.

Ethereum — ETH, may be approaching another major turning point after months of frustrating price action. ETH has faced repeated breakouts, sharp reversals, and heavy selling pressure. Now, several signals suggest momentum could finally shift toward buyers. Tom Lee expects ETH to reclaim $5,000 before 2026 ends. Other analysts see broader market conditions resembling past Ethereum bull cycles. If those patterns continue, Ethereum could lead another powerful rotation into altcoins.

Tom Lee Sees Ethereum Preparing for a Major Breakout

Tom Lee has turned increasingly bullish on Ethereum as ETH approaches a key technical barrier. On August 17, Lee highlighted Ethereum’s position relative to the daily Ichimoku Cloud. ETH sat roughly 3.5% below the cloud’s upper boundary, which has capped Ethereum since October 2025. A sustained move above the cloud could therefore mark a major technical shift. Such a breakout would end a long period of resistance and could give buyers stronger control over the trend.

Ethereum has struggled to establish lasting momentum above several major technical levels. Buyers now need to push through those barriers while maintaining strong trading activity. Lee also noted that the Ethereum ratio has broken above a long-term downtrend. That development could signal stronger relative performance ahead, especially if capital continues moving toward large-cap altcoins. Lee’s broader thesis focuses on how Ethereum has captured major waves of blockchain adoption.

Initial coin offerings fueled the 2017 and 2018 cycle, while NFTs helped drive the explosive 2020 and 2021 period. Stablecoins then became a major growth driver during 2025. Lee believes another powerful narrative could now emerge through Wall Street tokenization and AI agents using blockchain networks. That combination creates a different growth story for Ethereum. Institutional adoption could strengthen the network’s long-term investment case while new blockchain applications create additional demand.

Two Historic Signals Could Strengthen the Bullish Ethereum Case

Ash Crypto has highlighted another interesting setup involving traditional economic indicators. His argument begins with the Russell 2000 small-cap index, which recently broke out from a broad trading range. That development matters because a similar pattern appeared before Ethereum’s major 2017 rally.

In 2016, the Russell 2000 escaped a prolonged range before Ethereum climbed from around $10 to nearly $1,400 during the following cycle. History produced another version of that setup after the Russell 2000 broke out in 2020. Ethereum eventually surged from roughly $88 to nearly $4,800 by November 2021.

Past performance cannot guarantee another identical move. Investors often study these relationships when searching for early signs of changing risk appetite. Ash Crypto also pointed toward the ISM Manufacturing PMI. The indicator recently moved above the 55 level, which can reflect improving manufacturing activity and stronger economic momentum.

"Agent vs US Treasury" — Who Will Dominate the US Stock Market?

The wave of AI Agents and US Treasury yields are splitting the US stock market into two worlds: Meta's release of the Muse model boosted its market value by $220 billion in a single week, propelling the Nasdaq's standout performance; however, excluding AI stocks, the S&P 500 actually fell 1% this week, with the number of new lows on the New York Stock Exchange surpassing new highs for nine consecutive days, signaling the near end of "breadth trading." Goldman Sachs bluntly stated that this is a "frustrating cat-and-mouse game" between the stock market and interest rates—any breakout can be snuffed out by the bond market at any time, so equity holders must short US Treasury bonds to hedge simultaneously.
