SBI Securities and Rakuten Securities in Japan plan to independently develop crypto investment trust products
Foresight News reported, according to Nikkei, that SBI Securities and Rakuten Securities plan to begin offering cryptocurrency investment trust products, while several major brokerages such as Nomura Securities have stated they will consider following suit after a regulatory framework is established. Nikkei surveyed 18 major brokerages, with 11 indicating they would consider offering related products once regulations are in place. SBI Securities plans to sell funds developed by its group subsidiary SBI Global Asset Management, including ETFs and investment trusts comprising highly liquid cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, with product development and sales all handled within the group. Rakuten Securities likewise plans to develop products independently together with Rakuten Investment Management and other group members, aiming to make cryptocurrency investment trust trading available via a smartphone app.
On the regulatory front, the Financial Services Agency of Japan is promoting the inclusion of cryptocurrencies in investment trusts and ETFs, with plans to revise the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Investment Trust Law by 2028, which would classify cryptocurrencies as a specific asset class eligible for investment trusts. On April 10, the Japanese government approved amendment bills related to this matter; if passed by the current Diet session, these are expected to come into effect in fiscal year 2027. At that point, the tax rate on cryptocurrency trading profits will be reduced from the current maximum of 55% to 20%, in line with stocks and bonds.
