Bitcoin ecosystem developers propose BIP-361, suggesting the freezing of addresses vulnerable to quantum attacks
Foresight News reported that Bitcoin ecosystem developers such as jlopp and murchandamus have proposed Bitcoin Improvement Proposal BIP-361, suggesting freezing addresses vulnerable to quantum attacks—including those holding Satoshi Nakamoto's reserves—to prevent approximately 1.7 million Bitcoin from being stolen by future quantum computers. The proposal is to be advanced in three phases: first, prohibiting transfers to legacy addresses; second, five years later, invalidating legacy signatures and freezing unmigrated assets; and finally, allowing some users to recover frozen funds via zero-knowledge proof mechanisms. The proposal was released in draft form on GitHub on Tuesday.
The proposal aims to drive the entire network to migrate to quantum-resistant addresses but has faced opposition from some community members, who argue it goes against Bitcoin's decentralization ethos and is authoritarian and predatory in nature.
