Market Highlights for Tuesday, April 14

Here’s a summary of the key financial developments to watch on Tuesday, April 14:

After a strong start on Monday, the US Dollar Index reversed course and ended the day with significant losses. On Tuesday morning, the index remains under pressure, hovering at its lowest point since early March, below the 98.50 mark. Later in the US session, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release March’s Producer Price Index (PPI) figures. Additionally, several prominent central bank officials are scheduled to speak throughout the day.

On the geopolitical front, President Donald Trump revealed late Monday that the US had received overtures from credible Iranian representatives expressing interest in reaching an agreement. He also confirmed that the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was underway. Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that, although no major breakthrough had been achieved, significant progress had been made in negotiations. Vance added that a comprehensive deal could be within reach if Iran is prepared to move forward. According to the New York Times, Iranian negotiators offered to halt nuclear activities for five years during recent talks, but the US pushed for a 20-year suspension.

US stock markets ended Monday with mixed results: the S&P 500 slipped by around 0.1%, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed over 1%. Early Tuesday, futures for major US stock indexes are showing little movement.

In Asia, Japan’s latest data indicated that industrial production fell by 2% in February compared to the previous month, a slightly better outcome than the anticipated 2.1% decline. The USD/JPY pair continues its downward trend, trading near 159.20 in European markets after modest losses on Monday.

The EUR/USD pair is holding firm and advancing toward the 1.1800 level, reaching its highest value since March 2. Later today, European Central Bank (ECB) Chief Economist Philip Lane and President Christine Lagarde are expected to deliver remarks during the US session.

GBP/USD rose by over 0.3% on Monday, overcoming an initial bearish gap at the week’s open. The currency pair continues to climb, trading above 1.3500 as European markets open. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey is scheduled to join a panel discussion at Columbia University later today.

Gold rebounded after dipping below $4,650, posting modest gains on Monday. The XAU/USD pair is extending its recovery on Tuesday, approaching the $4,800 level.

Crude oil prices are steady in early Tuesday trading, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude moving within a tight range just under $93.00 per barrel.

"Agent vs US Treasury" — Who Will Dominate the US Stock Market?

The wave of AI Agents and US Treasury yields are splitting the US stock market into two worlds: Meta's release of the Muse model boosted its market value by $220 billion in a single week, propelling the Nasdaq's standout performance; however, excluding AI stocks, the S&P 500 actually fell 1% this week, with the number of new lows on the New York Stock Exchange surpassing new highs for nine consecutive days, signaling the near end of "breadth trading." Goldman Sachs bluntly stated that this is a "frustrating cat-and-mouse game" between the stock market and interest rates—any breakout can be snuffed out by the bond market at any time, so equity holders must short US Treasury bonds to hedge simultaneously.
