Impact of Iran Ceasefire on ECB Interest Rate Expectations

The recent ceasefire in the Iran conflict has helped ease the pressure on oil prices, but it may not be enough to prevent the European Central Bank from raising interest rates this year. Prior to the outbreak of the war, forecasts suggested the ECB would maintain stable rates through 2026. However, the escalation in energy costs due to the war reignited worries about inflation, prompting financial markets to anticipate up to three rate increases within the year.

Following the ceasefire, the interest rate swap markets—which allow investors to speculate on future rate movements—have adjusted their outlook. Now, market participants generally expect the ECB to implement around two rate hikes instead of three. The situation remains dynamic as investors continue to monitor developments.
