US Media: Iranian Speaker Threatens to Cut Off Strait of Hormuz Shipping
BlockBeats News, April 5th. According to a report from the website of the American National Broadcasting Corporation on April 3rd, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, seemed to threaten to disrupt the commercial shipping traffic in the strategic chokepoint Strait of Hormuz.
Reportedly, Qalibaf posted on social platform X, asking, "How much of the global share of oil, liquefied natural gas, wheat, rice, and fertilizer transport passes through the Strait of Hormuz?" He then wrote, "Which countries and companies have the highest share in the transportation volume through this strait?"
In recent years, ships passing through the region have been repeatedly attacked by the Yemeni Houthi armed group allied with the Iranian regime. The threat to the Strait of Hormuz comes as Iran has already significantly disrupted shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has plunged the global economy into chaos.
