Australian Dollar lags behind as renewed tensions in the Middle East weigh on risk-sensitive assets
Australian Dollar Weakens Amid Heightened Geopolitical Risks
The Australian Dollar (AUD) has declined against its major counterparts, falling by 0.75% to approximately 0.6875 versus the US Dollar (USD) during Thursday's European trading hours. This downward movement is largely attributed to renewed concerns over prolonged conflict in the Middle East, which has triggered a risk-averse sentiment following a national address by US President Donald Trump.
Risk-sensitive assets are under pressure, as evidenced by the S&P 500 futures dropping more than 1% in European markets, signaling diminished investor appetite for risk.
Earlier in the Asian session, President Trump issued a warning that military operations against Iran could escalate within the next two to three weeks. He also threatened to severely damage Iran's electricity infrastructure if negotiations fail, stating, "We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks, and bring them back to the stone ages."
On Wednesday, optimism briefly returned to financial markets when Iran indicated a willingness to pursue peace, marking the first time Tehran has expressed interest in ending hostilities since the conflict began.
Amid these rising geopolitical tensions, demand for safe-haven assets such as the US Dollar has strengthened. At the time of reporting, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the currency against six major peers, has risen by 0.6% to around 100.15.
Upcoming Economic Data
Looking ahead, investors are anticipating the release of the US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report for March, scheduled for Friday. This data will be closely watched for insights into the Federal Reserve's monetary policy direction.
The situation is expected to remain uncertain for an extended period.
