This expectation was largely based on patterns seen in 2022, when Europe's reliance on imported fossil fuels led to a significant deterioration in its terms of trade, while the United States benefited from its energy self-sufficiency.
However, in the current rapidly changing landscape, the impact of central banks' monetary policies can sometimes be underestimated. In fact, the recent shift towards a more aggressive tightening by the European Central Bank compared to the Federal Reserve—reflected in nominal interest rates—may have offered some unexpected support to the euro against the dollar.
