NZD/USD Slides Despite Early Gains

The NZD/USD currency pair slipped into negative territory, hovering near 0.5930 during Wednesday’s Asian session after surrendering earlier advances. The New Zealand Dollar had initially strengthened, buoyed by growing expectations that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) may raise interest rates in 2026—a sentiment fueled by mounting domestic inflation risks linked to the recent spike in oil prices.

Oil Market Turbulence Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Oil prices continue to fluctuate as uncertainty intensifies over the Iran conflict and the security of shipping routes through the critical Strait of Hormuz. According to The Wall Street Journal, the International Energy Agency (IEA) is weighing an unprecedented release of oil reserves to help calm the markets, though ongoing shipping challenges in the region remain unresolved.

Persistent Inflation Pressures in New Zealand

Analysts now anticipate that inflation in New Zealand will linger longer than the central bank’s projections, reinforcing the likelihood of an RBNZ rate hike in 2026. This represents a notable shift from last month, when the RBNZ suggested the official cash rate would likely remain steady at 2.25% for the year. The current market outlook reflects this change in sentiment.

US Dollar Movement and Middle East Developments

The US Dollar has softened after modest gains in the previous session. However, heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East could prompt renewed demand for the Greenback as a safe-haven asset.

On Monday evening, US President Donald Trump expressed optimism that the Middle East conflict might soon be resolved. Nevertheless, Reuters reported on Tuesday that US officials acknowledged an escalation in military activity in Iran, with diplomatic solutions appearing unlikely at this stage.

Indirect Negotiations Between the US and Iran? Iran Makes Concessions? Major Differences Remain? Saudi Arabia Resumes Exports? Overnight Oil Prices Volatile and Falling Amid Mixed Bullish and Bearish Views

On Monday, after WTI peaked at $96.54 and Brent surged to $108.83, both benchmarks retreated by over $5 within a few hours. The resumption of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline constituted the first substantial bearish factor. Meanwhile, US-Iran diplomatic developments escalated: reports claimed Trump was willing to ease sanctions in exchange for nuclear concessions, which he immediately denied in person; Iran was reportedly willing to suspend uranium enrichment, but the US stated that “major differences remain.” Privately, Iran believes the chances of reaching a deal before the US presidential election are slim. Expectations are for potential escalation in conflicts after the election, making it difficult for market risk premiums to dissipate.
