US Stock Futures Slide Amid Middle East Tensions

During European trading hours on Tuesday, Dow Jones futures dropped by 1.26% to around 48,330 ahead of the US market opening. At the same time, S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were down 1.20% and 1.51%, trading near 6,800 and 24,650, respectively.

Futures for major US equity indices retreated as investors monitored intensifying conflict in the Middle East. According to US military sources, command centers belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, along with Iranian missile and air defense installations, have been targeted and destroyed since the joint Israeli-US military campaign began on Saturday.

Senior adviser Ebrahim Jabari of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned, as reported by Reuters, “The Strait of Hormuz is now closed. Any vessel attempting passage will be set on fire by the Revolutionary Guards and the navy.”

Market Performance and Sector Highlights

On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped by 0.15% in regular trading, while the S&P 500 edged up 0.04% and the Nasdaq-100 advanced 0.36%. Defense and energy companies led the gains, with Northrop Grumman surging 6%, Palantir Technologies climbing 5.8%, and Exxon Mobil increasing by 1.1%.

Rising Yields and Inflation Worries

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 4.07%, up 10 basis points, as mounting geopolitical risks pushed energy prices higher and fueled inflation fears. The increase in Treasury yields has put pressure on equity futures, as higher rates reduce the present value of future corporate profits.

Shifting Federal Reserve Rate Cut Expectations

Elevated fuel prices have heightened inflation anxieties, leading traders to reconsider their expectations for future Federal Reserve policy moves. The anticipated timing for the next Fed rate cut has been pushed back to September from July, although markets still expect two 25 basis point reductions this year.
