The slowdown in electric vehicle transformation eases ZF's debt pressure to some extent

ZF Friedrichshafen AG's debt pressure is easing to some extent, as the slowdown in the pace of electric vehicle transformation has boosted demand for key components such as transmissions.

Michael Frick, Chief Financial Officer of ZF, stated in an interview that the company has shifted its strategic focus from prioritizing electric vehicles to supplying components for pure electric, hybrid, and fuel-powered vehicles simultaneously. This strategic adjustment will help improve the company’s financial situation. The German parts supplier, which provides products to Ford, Volkswagen, and BMW, has already benefited from more favorable refinancing costs.

“We have established a new strategic direction in drive technology,” Frick said. “We believe that the increase in interest rates and credit spreads experienced over the past two years is only a temporary phenomenon.”

As the world’s third-largest automotive parts manufacturer, according to ZF's latest financial report released in September, the company faces refinancing obligations exceeding 13 billion euros (about $15.3 billion) by the end of 2030, with rising interest rates putting pressure on it. The combination of financial difficulties and a decline in operating profit margins has prompted the company to plan layoffs of about 14,000 employees, including in the electric vehicle division.

The slowdown in electrification has caught most companies in the industry off guard. Stellantis also joined Ford and General Motors this month, announcing a provision of 22.2 billion euros in asset impairments and related expenses, mainly related to adjustments in its electric vehicle strategy, including the postponement of several model launches.

Bloomberg strategist Simon White warns that the recent rise in US Treasury yields is shifting from a "benign" increase driven by interest rate expectations to a disorderly surge fueled by expanding term premium. Market analysts note that higher long-term interest rates will simultaneously push up US stock valuation discount rates and corporate financing costs, intensifying liquidation pressure on highly leveraged assets. If interest rates above 5% become the new norm, US stock valuations will face ongoing compression pressure.
