Japan Sees Easing Inflation in January
Japan experienced a slowdown in inflation last January, according to official figures released on Friday. This development comes as a positive sign for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, following her decisive election victory. The rapid rise in prices had previously played a role in unseating Takaichi’s two immediate predecessors, making the fight against inflation a central focus for Japan’s first female prime minister.
Government statistics revealed that, excluding fresh food, the nation’s core consumer prices increased by 2.0 percent compared to the previous year. This marks a decrease from December’s 2.4 percent rise and matches analysts’ forecasts. When both fresh food and energy costs are omitted, inflation cooled more than anticipated, dropping to 2.6 percent from 2.9 percent.
