For beginners who are new to CFDs, a demo account is a useful tool for becoming familiar with the trading process and practising risk management. You can use virtual funds to monitor market conditions, practise opening and closing positions, set stop-loss and take-profit orders, and test your trading plan.

However, demo trading is not the same as live trading. When using a demo account, the goal should not simply be to pursue virtual profits. More importantly, it is an opportunity to build a clear, executable and reviewable trading process. Here are seven steps beginners can follow.

Step 1: Set Your Learning Goals

Before starting demo trading, clarify what you want to achieve. Instead of setting a general goal such as “I want to make money”, consider setting more specific goals, such as:

  • Becoming familiar with the basic functions of the trading platform

  • Understanding leverage, margin and spreads

  • Practising the use of stop-loss and take-profit orders

  • Completing a set number of recorded trades

  • Testing a trading strategy

Clear goals can help you understand the purpose of demo trading and avoid focusing only on changes in your account balance.

Step 2: Choose a Small Number of Familiar Products

CFDs may cover different markets, including stocks, indices, forex and commodities. Beginners do not need to trade multiple products from the start. Instead, consider choosing one or two markets that you are more familiar with and focus on observing:

  • Price movements

  • Trading hours

  • Spreads and trading costs

  • The impact of major news events

  • Common market trends and patterns

Starting with a small number of products can help reduce information overload and make it easier to review your trading performance later.

Step 3: Set Your Position Size and Risk Per Trade

Before opening a position, decide on the trade size and the potential loss you are willing to accept. Do not use excessively large positions or high leverage simply because a demo account uses virtual funds.

Your trading plan can include:

  • The maximum risk per trade

  • The level of leverage to use

  • The maximum position size

  • Daily or weekly loss limits

  • Whether to pause trading after consecutive losses

Practising with a more cautious approach during the demo stage can help you develop habits that are closer to live trading.

Step 4: Define Your Entry and Exit Conditions

Do not open a position simply because the price is rising or falling. Before trading, write down your entry and exit rules.

For example:

  • Under what market conditions will you consider entering?

  • What is the basis for your trading direction?

  • Under what circumstances will you avoid trading?

  • How will you set your stop-loss level?

  • What is your target price or take-profit condition?

  • What will you do if the market moves against your expectations?

Writing down your rules can help reduce impulsive decisions and emotional trading.

Step 5: Set a Stop-Loss for Every Trade

A stop-loss can help traders plan their exit conditions in advance and prevent losses from continuing to grow. When setting a stop-loss, consider both market volatility and the risk of the individual trade instead of choosing a price arbitrarily.

When using a demo account, observe:

  • Whether the stop-loss distance is too close or too far

  • Whether market volatility makes the stop-loss easy to trigger

  • Whether the actual execution result matches your expectations

  • Whether the stop-loss setting follows your original trading plan

Please note that during periods of sharp volatility, market gaps or limited liquidity, a stop-loss may not be executed at the specified price.

Step 6: Avoid Increasing Positions After Losses or Overtrading

A common issue in demo trading is increasing a position immediately after a loss in an attempt to recover it. Some traders may also open positions too frequently because they are not under the pressure of losing real money.

These behaviours may create poor trading habits, including:

  • Adding to positions without a clear plan

  • Continuously increasing leverage

  • Repeatedly opening positions

  • Closing positions against the original plan

  • Changing strategies based only on short-term price movements

Once you have established a trading plan, follow it consistently. If your predefined risk limit is reached, consider pausing trading and reviewing your results.

Step 7: Record and Review Your Trading Results Regularly

Keeping trading records is an important part of demo trading. After completing each trade, consider recording:

  • The trading product and direction

  • Opening and closing prices

  • Holding period

  • Reasons for entering and exiting

  • Position size and leverage

  • Stop-loss and take-profit settings

  • Trading costs

  • Final profit or loss

  • Whether emotions affected your decisions

When reviewing your trades, do not focus only on whether you made or lost money. Also consider whether you followed your plan and whether any issues came from market analysis, position management or execution discipline.

Example of a Trading Plan for Beginners

Before you start, you can use the following format to organise your trading plan:

  • Trading product:

  • Trading direction:

  • Entry conditions:

  • Expected holding period:

  • Stop-loss level:

  • Take-profit or exit conditions:

  • Maximum risk per trade:

  • Situations in which you will not trade:

  • Post-trade review:

A simple and clear plan is usually easier to follow and review than making decisions based on market sentiment in the moment.
