$GRVT Billions are flowing back into Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), but the figures alone do not reveal how much of the demand comes from institutions, according to CoinShares. US crypto investment products had attracted about $4.1 billion in September, with BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) accounting for more than 53% of those inflows, CoinShares head of research James Butterfill told Cointelegraph. Crypto investment products attracted about $3.5 billion across the industry over the preceding five trading days, CoinShares said in a Sept. 25 market update. Asked whether institutional investors were returning to crypto, Butterfill said, “Potentially yes, but in the ETF world it is very difficult to disaggregate institutional and retail money.” ETF buying can reflect arbitrage strategies as well as bets on rising Bitcoin prices, making inflows an imperfect measure of bullish conviction. Butterfill also sees investors looking beyond tokens to businesses that profit from crypto adoption. IBIT offers clues to institutional demand Butterfill said many institutional investors use IBIT for the Bitcoin basis trade. The strategy involves buying shares of a spot Bitcoin ETF while shorting Bitcoin futures, with the aim of profiting from the difference between spot and futures prices as they converge. “At the moment the basis trade has an attractive yield at 6%, and month to date IBIT has seen over 53% of the $4.1 billion inflows,” Butterfill said. The figures suggest positive sentiment is broad-based across both institutional and retail investors, he added. More recent CoinShares data shared with Cointelegraph showed September inflows into US crypto investment products had risen to about $4.44 billion, compared with $4.53 billion globally. Bitcoin (BTC) products led inflows with $2.84 billion, followed by Ether (ETH) with around $946 million, while Zcash (ZEC) ranked third with $284 million. CoinShares points to digital asset rotation Butterfill also pointed to growing investor interest in companies that make money from crypto adoption. “The rotation within digital assets deserves more attention,” he said, pointing to early-September CoinShares data that showed more than $100 million flowing into blockchain equities over the preceding month. The company says it wants to reach that coverage within six to eight months, although the timetable remains dependent on regulatory approvals and the financial institutions supporting the card program. The Stablecoins Stay Behind The Payment Experience BIX combines a self-custody crypto wallet with a Visa card. Eligible users can hold supported USDC or USDT balances while using the card for ordinary purchases. The merchant still receives fiat through the conventional Visa payment system. That structure is becoming increasingly common across crypto cards. The customer keeps value in a blockchain-based asset. The merchant does not need to accept crypto or operate blockchain infrastructure. BIX says supported stablecoin and network combinations include infrastructure across Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Solana and Optimism. The product is therefore less about convincing shops to accept USDT directly and more about using existing card rails as the final step between a stablecoin balance and a conventional purchase. State Coverage Is A Regulatory Problem More Than A Technology Problem The reason BIX is not already available nationwide has little to do with whether its app works in another state. U.S. crypto-linked card programs rely on regulated banking, issuing and payments partners whose permissions and requirements vary across jurisdictions. That makes geographic expansion partly a compliance exercise. BIX says it expects to add another 20 states as its partners and approvals allow. The company currently offers a free standard membership, with virtual cards available to eligible users. Additional products under development include physical cards and account functionality intended to connect stablecoin balances with conventional systems such as ACH, SEPA and SWIFT. Those plans remain future products rather than features every user can access today. Crypto cards have been around for years, but stablecoins have made the proposition simpler. Instead of spending a volatile token and triggering a conversion at checkout, a user can keep a dollar-denominated balance and treat the card as an interface into it. Ethereum is heading into the final stretch of Q3 with a notable lead over Bitcoin, raising an important question for the next quarter: can ETH continue its momentum into Q4? According to CoinGlass data cited in the report, Ethereum is on track to close Q3 with more than 70% gains, compared with roughly 43% for Bitcoin. That means ETH’s quarterly return is more than 1.5 times Bitcoin’s performance. The bigger test, however, may be the ETH/BTC ratio. Historically, Q4 has been a stronger period for Bitcoin relative to Ethereum. Since 2021, Ethereum has not outperformed Bitcoin during the fourth quarter. ETH/BTC is now trading around the 0.03 resistance level, an area Ethereum has struggled to reclaim since falling below it ahead of the October market crash. A sustained breakout above 0.03 could therefore become an important technical signal that Ethereum’s Q3 strength is carrying into Q4. BitMine Immersion Technologies has reportedly purchased another 17,000 ETH, continuing its aggressive Ethereum accumulation strategy. The move comes while companies such as Strategy and Strive remain focused on Bitcoin accumulation. The contrast is notable. Bitcoin ETFs are still attracting significant institutional capital. According to SoSoValue data cited in the report, Bitcoin ETF net inflows for Q3 have exceeded $6 billion, compared with around $3 billion for Ethereum ETFs. At the same time, Ethereum’s market structure has been improving. Bitcoin dominance has fallen by nearly 1.7% during the month, while the Altcoin Season Index has moved above its previous mid-August high of 61. These developments suggest that capital rotation toward Ethereum and other altcoins may be gaining momentum. Could ETH Lead Another Rotation? The combination of stronger Q3 performance, declining Bitcoin dominance, improving altcoin breadth and BitMine’s continued ETH accumulation has brought the ETH/BTC ratio back into focus. Still, a breakout is not confirmed yet. The 0.03 level remains an important hurdle, and Ethereum will need sustained buying pressure to move decisively above it. If ETH/BTC successfully breaks higher, Ethereum could enter Q4 with considerably stronger relative momentum than it had at the start of the quarter. For now, the market is watching one key question: can Ethereum turn its Q3 outperformance into a sustained Q4 trend?
